Teeth whitening is a cosmetic dentistry procedure that removes stains and discolorations from teeth, making them appear whiter and brighter. Common causes of tooth discoloration include consumption of dark-colored food and drinks, tobacco use, certain medications, poor oral hygiene, aging, trauma, and heredity.

At Boutique Dental, before teeth whitening procedures can begin, your dentist will perform a complete oral examination to determine the cause of your tooth discoloration. When the cause of the tooth discoloration is determined, an appropriate treatment will be recommended. In most cases, teeth whitening procedures are performed using a bleaching solution that contains either hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide. The bleaching agent is applied directly to the surface of the teeth and left on for about an hour so it can work its magic.

Is Whitening Right for Me?

When teeth become stained, it can be embarrassing. Dark foods, like coffee, can stain your teeth. So can tobacco use, chewing tobacco, or smoking cigars. Even some medications can cause your teeth to change color over time. Your teeth can also change color with age. But it doesn’t have to be a permanent problem that will leave you feeling unconfident in your smile.

Professional teeth whitening treatment can make a dramatic difference in the appearance of your smile. It’s safe, effective, and affordable when used for cosmetic reasons.

Things to Avoid Following Teeth Whitening

Smoking

Until the whitening treatment has been fully completed, avoiding smoking and tobacco products is essential. When you smoke, particles from the tobacco are deposited on your teeth, making them appear discolored or yellowed as the stains build up over time. If the teeth become stained enough post-treatment, you may need to repeat the procedure to brighten them up.

Drinking Coffee or Soda

Right after your whitening procedure, it’s best to stick to drinks that won’t stain your teeth again. This means avoiding coffee, tea, and any dark-colored sodas. You should also avoid smoking because it can discolor your teeth quickly after the procedure. It’s also a good idea to rinse your mouth with mouthwash every day after your teeth whitening treatment. This will help keep stains from forming on your teeth.

Drinking Acidic Beverages like Citrus Juices

Acidic drinks can also damage your teeth after whitening. Sodas, coffee, wine, dark fruit juices, and sour candies can all cause your enamel to wear away and cause your teeth to become more sensitive. These beverages are also high in sugar and can increase your chances of developing tooth decay or cavities. It’s best to avoid drinking them after your treatment has been completed.

Once you’ve completed a whitening treatment, you’ll still need to keep up with regular dental cleanings and exams. Visit Boutique Dental at 68-35 Myrtle Ave, Glendale, NY 11385, or call (718) 821-0170 to schedule an appointment.
