There are times when the pervasive bacteria in your mouth manages to exploit the enamel of a tooth, causing a modest area of tooth decay. If you notice a change in your tooth’s texture, a sharp tooth edge or tooth sensitivity, you need to take it seriously. If an area of tooth decay is detected early, our Boutique Dental, P.C. team can repair it with a simple filling.

Large cavities on the biting surface of a back tooth can sometimes be repaired with fillings that are known as inlays or onlays. In most cases, inlays and onlays are made from porcelain or gold. The only key difference between these two types of fillings is related to the size and location of the tooth decay.

Inlays are used to repair a cavity that is on the biting surface of a molar or premolar. Onlays are used to repair a larger cavity that extends from the biting surface to the side of the tooth.

Inlays and onlays are usually made of either gold or porcelain. As such, they often need to be custom crafted at a separate dental lab. Your dentist, Dr. Yelena Mullakandova, will call you back into our office for a short second appointment once the lab has completed your inlay or onlay. During this appointment, the temporary filling will be removed and your new filling will be cemented in place.

If you suspect a cavity has formed on one of your teeth, you should call Boutique Dental, P.C. at 718.821.0170 to schedule an appointment regarding dental fillings in Glendale, New York.
