Do you have a tooth that's causing you pain and discomfort? If so, you might be wondering if there is any hope for saving it. Fortunately, the answer could very well be yes! One of the most common procedures used to save teeth is called a root canal. Despite its reputation as being painful and scary, this procedure can actually provide relief from your toothache while preserving your natural smile.
A root canal is a dental procedure used to remove infected or damaged tissue from inside a tooth. This tissue, called the pulp, contains nerves and blood vessels that help keep the tooth alive. When the pulp becomes infected due to decay or trauma, it can cause severe pain and even lead to an abscess.
While some people may be hesitant about getting a root canal due to its reputation for being painful, modern techniques and anesthesia make this procedure much more comfortable than you might expect!
There are several reasons why you might need a root canal. One of the most common causes is deep decay that has reached the pulp - the innermost part of your tooth where nerves and blood vessels are found. When this happens, bacteria can enter the pulp and cause infection, leading to pain and swelling.
Another reason for needing a root canal is trauma or injury to your tooth, which can damage the blood vessels and nerves in the pulp. This can also lead to infection and inflammation.
In some cases, extensive dental work, such as multiple fillings or crowns placed on a single tooth, may cause enough stress to affect its health. If this occurs, a root canal may be necessary.
Regardless of what caused it, if left untreated, an infected or inflamed pulp can spread beyond your tooth into surrounding tissues causing further complications like abscesses or bone loss.
If you're experiencing any pain or sensitivity in your teeth - especially when eating hot/cold foods/drinks- it's important to see your dentist immediately. They will conduct an examination using X-rays and other diagnostic tests to determine whether a root canal procedure is needed.
A root canal procedure is typically performed in two to three visits, but it can vary depending on the individual case. During the first visit, your dentist will numb the affected tooth and surrounding area before creating a small opening in the top of your tooth to access its pulp. Using specialized tools, your dentist will then remove any damaged or infected tissue from the inside of your tooth's roots. Once this process is complete, they'll thoroughly clean out the interior of your tooth before sealing it with a temporary filling.
In between appointments, you'll need to take care not to chew heavily on that side of your mouth and avoid hard or crunchy foods that could damage the temporary filling. During subsequent visits, your dentist will remove the temporary filling and replace it with a permanent one. In some cases, they may also recommend placing a crown over the treated tooth for added protection.
