Vitamins and minerals are important nutrients that our body needs to stay healthy. These nutrients are in many of the foods that we eat, but oftentimes, they are not consumed in sufficient quantities.

Vitamin C

Vitamin C may help improve gum health and prevent gum disease from progressing into periodontitis. It can also help reduce tooth sensitivity, a common symptom of gingivitis. Food sources include bell peppers, kiwifruit, kale, broccoli, strawberries, oranges, and grapefruit.

Vitamin C has also been studied as a mouthwash ingredient; this research suggests it may help kill oral bacteria in the mouth. It also reduces plaque and gingivitis symptoms when used as a rinse.

Your dentist may recommend vitamin C supplements in addition to continued brushing and flossing at home. These supplements can help you prevent or treat periodontal disease.

Vitamin D

Vitamin D is a game changer when it comes to dental health because it plays an important role in protecting the body from infections. It’s needed for the proper development and growth of teeth and bones and for maintaining healthy gum tissue. It’s also needed to prevent periodontal disease, such as gingivitis.

Calcium

Calcium plays many roles in the body, including building strong bones and teeth. It also works with phosphorus to create healthy enamel. There are several sources of calcium besides dairy products. Leafy greens like kale, spinach, broccoli, and bok choy are a great source of calcium. Additionally, almonds and salmon contain calcium as well. Alternately, there are also non-dairy options such as almond milk and cheese made from soy or rice milk.

In addition to helping prevent osteoporosis, getting enough calcium helps to prevent tooth decay and gum disease. Without enough calcium, the body will take the mineral from the teeth and bones. Over time, this can lead to weaker teeth and tooth loss. Similarly, when there is not enough calcium in the diet, it can lead to gum disease by weakening the body’s ability to fight infection and inflammation.

Magnesium

Your teeth and gums are made of minerals, mainly calcium and phosphorous. However, your teeth also absorb other key nutrients through your diet that keeps them strong and healthy. One mineral is magnesium, which is found in whole grains, legumes, nuts, and green leafy vegetables. This mineral helps build and maintain tooth enamel and promotes healthy gums. It also helps keep your bones healthy and helps regulate blood pressure. Some foods high in magnesium include almonds, spinach, Swiss chard, black beans, pinto beans, edamame, pumpkin seeds, and lentils.

Potassium

Potassium is a natural mineral found in your body’s cells, organs, tissues, liquids, and foods. It is also an electrolyte that helps maintain fluid balance and body pH. Your mouth has natural bacteria in it that can cause tooth decay and gum disease. Eating foods that are high in potassium can help balance the levels of acidity in your mouth. This can help stop the bacterial growth that causes cavities and gum disease. Some good sources of this mineral include bananas, oranges, potatoes, avocados, salmon, tuna, nuts, legumes, yogurt, and more.
